The 6th Form experience at South Axholme Academy has been designed to provide the most beneficial elements of being at a school with the freedom, rights and responsibilities that are usually only achieved at college level. As it is throughout the Academy, mutual respect continues to be a core value in our 6th Form.
Feedback and ideas from 6th Formers are actively encouraged and will be frequently used as the drivers of new initiatives and change within the Academy. Our 6th Formers are also encouraged to involve themselves in the enhancement of the student voice of the Academy as a whole. More than anything else, we want our 6th Formers to be mentors and role models for younger students in the Academy.
Our students will have access to:
- A refurbished study zone.
- A fully equipped IT zone.
- A refurbished common room area.
- Facilities to make drinks and snacks.
Our 6th Formers have the benefit of a refurbished centralised 6th Form area, containing both a common room and a study area. This area is solely for the use of 6th Form students in order for them to have the necessary space to complete both group and individual work, as well as providing a social space. These facilities allow our students to take ownership of their learning, providing them with a calm and relaxed learning environment.
Our 6th Formers are role models for younger students and it is important that they are part of the day to day life of the Academy. For this reason, A level and Level 3 classes will be taught in subject-specific classrooms around the Academy, meaning that 6th Formers will still be fully integrated within the academy community.
Whilst recognising and meeting the demands for academic success, the caring environment of South Axholme strives to give students every opportunity to maximise their enjoyment of learning. During their time with us, students will have a personal tutor that they see daily, an extended support network including the Head of 6th Form and 6th Form Strategic Lead, and access to our dedicated pastoral care team.
Our approach encourages critical thinking, independence and self-directed study; these are precisely the qualities that universities and employers are looking for, and are the qualities that we aim to foster in all of those who choose to study with us. However, we recognise that these skills take time to develop and we are here to support students every step of the way to help prepare them for their future career.
Student voice is at the heart of our 6th Form, and our student council plays an active role in shaping student experiences, taking the lead in organising social, charitable and sporting events, and making our vibrant social space a great place to catch up with friends during a busy day of study.
We recognise that the 6th Form is not just about achieving good grades; it is a chance for students to develop as a whole, and we are confident that our holistic approach will provide the perfect environment in which everyone can achieve their full potential.
The student-run 6th Form council has opted for a smart dress code that is in keeping with their desire to be role models to the rest of the academy, but with the flexibility that allows them to express their individuality. Therefore, as part of our 6th Form community, students can expect to wear attire that is appropriate for the business environment.
The average L3VA (Level 3 value added) score over the past 3 years places the 6th Form amongst the top performing 6th Form providers nationally. The percentage of A*/B grades at A level continued to rise in 2019 with 69% of all A level entries being awarded these top grades as well as a 100% pass rate for all A level entries. As subjects both Business and Sport secured 100% Distinction * at Level 3.
