Safeguarding
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility. Through our Expect Excellence ethos and our Ready, Resilient, Respectful Mindset, we teach students to keep themselves and others safe. Safeguarding extends beyond child protection and includes attendance, mental health, online safety, behaviour, anti-bullying, educational visits, site security, health and safety and promoting wellbeing.
- Safeguarding legislation and government guidance says that safeguarding means:
- Protecting children from maltreatment
- Preventing impairment of children's health or development
- Ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances with the provision of safe and effective care
- Taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes
Statutory Guidance
We follow Working Together to Safeguard Children, Keeping Children Safe in Education and the Prevent Duty. Staff receive regular safeguarding training which is recorded and stored centrally.
Our Safeguarding Team:
- Designated Safeguarding Lead: Mr C Barnes (Vice Principal)
- Deputy DSLs: Mrs Jane Hall (Y11), Mrs A Haigh (Y10), Miss O Brennan (Y9), Mrs N Smith (Y8), Mrs V Lee (Y7).
Supporting Student Wellbeing
Students can access support through their Progress and Achievement Leader, the SEND Team, the Hub, Emotional Literacy Support, With Me in Mind and the array of other external agencies we work closely with as appropriate.
Helping Students Stay Safe
Safeguarding is embedded across PSHE, tutor time, assemblies and the wider curriculum. Students learn an array of important topics to help them navigate modern life safely. We take local safeguarding issues seriously. Emerging concerns are incorporated into our PSHE and assembly programme to ensure we take a proactive rather than reactive approach to safeguarding. We are proud to work with local partners including neighbourhood policing teams, health professionals and safeguarding specialists who deliver targeted education for our students.
Anti-Bullying and Inclusion
We are proud to be participating in the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Programme and operate a zero-tolerance approach to bullying, discriminatory language, prejudice and unkind behaviour. All concerns are investigated promptly and thoroughly in line with our policies.
Reporting Concerns
Students can report concerns by speaking to any trusted adult, their Progress and Achievement Leader, a member of the Safeguarding Team, or speaking to staff or bus prefects when travelling to and from school. We also have a safeguarding QR code where anyone can report unkind behaviour or any concerns through and these are picked up centrally by the safeguarding team.

The form can also be found here
Safer Recruitment
The Academy follows robust safer recruitment procedures including enhanced DBS and statutory pre-employment checks with regular checks of the Single Central Register happening. All visitors sign in and follow safeguarding procedures. A picture of the DSL and reporting system is visible on the back of all visitor passes to allow reporting for visitors who do not have internal access to our CPOMs reporting system.
