Home Learning at South Axholme Academy
At South Axholme Academy, we believe that high-quality home learning plays an important role in supporting students' academic success. Home learning is carefully planned to complement classroom teaching, helping students to deepen their understanding, practise key skills, and develop the independence, resilience and organisation needed to become successful lifelong learners.
Home learning may be used to:
- Prepare students for future learning
- Consolidate and extend learning from lessons
- Provide opportunities to practise and apply key skills
- Challenge students beyond the classroom curriculum
- Develop independence, resilience and confidence
- Strengthen organisation, time management and study skills
Research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) indicates that homework has a positive impact on learning, with an average impact of around five months’ additional progress, particularly at secondary level. The evidence also highlights that the quality and purpose of home learning are more important than the quantity of work set. Home learning is most effective when it is closely connected to classroom learning, its purpose is clear and students receive appropriate feedback.
The amount of home learning varies by subject and year group, with tasks set when they are most appropriate to support students’ learning. As a guide, students in Key Stage 3 can expect regular, subject-specific home learning, while students in Key Stage 4 will typically receive around 45 minutes of home learning per subject each week.
The amount of home learning may vary at different points in the academic year. For example, students may receive additional tasks during assessment and revision periods, while the amount set may be reduced following an assessment cycle.
All home learning is set through Satchel One (see information below), where students can access tasks, resources and submission deadlines. Teachers provide clear instructions and may also use Microsoft Teams to share additional support materials.
We are committed to ensuring that all students can engage successfully with home learning. Additional support, resources and reasonable adjustments are provided where needed, including for disadvantaged students and those with SEND. Staff work closely with students and families to remove barriers and help every learner achieve their full potential.
